International network in the field of social evaluation

In 2019, SBU was tasked with creating an international network for organisations working with social intervention assessment (SIA). This work resulted in the International Network for Social Intervention Assessment (INSIA). The network includes one seven member organisations from seven different countries. SBU is responsible for the secretariat and the INSIA website and also has a representative on the network’s Board.

In 2025, SBU together with INSIA member organisations published a statement of intent for the network in a scientific journal.

During the year, the emphasis has been on supporting the network to continue its growth and contributing to the exchange and development of knowledge, thereby facilitating more appropriate social evaluations that contribute to knowledge-based and equitable health and social care.

Compilation of summaries on behaviour-oriented methods to increase physical activity

In January 2024, SBU was commissioned by the government to conduct a review of methods to promote health, with particular emphasis on physical activity. This assignment involved mapping existing scientific knowledge in the field of health and medical care, social care and social services and identifying areas in which the research needs to be strengthened. Discussions with the Swedish Public Health Agency, the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare and other relevant actors identified behaviour-oriented interventions to increase physical activity as the most urgent area to focus on in the review.

In 2025 SBU published the report titled Beteendeinriktade insatser inom vård, omsorg och socialtjänst för att öka fysisk aktivitet. En kartläggning och förslag till nya kunskapsunderlag [Behaviour-oriented interventions in the field of health and medical care, social care and social services to increase physical activity. Mapping and proposals for new knowledge bases].

Support for the National Board of Health and Welfare in developing a national model for risk assessment in dentistry

SBU was commissioned by the government in June 2024 to support the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare in its task of developing a national model for risk assessment in the field of dental care. SBU has updated the reports on general prediction models and prediction models for dental caries and periodontitis, the two most common oral diseases. Additionally, SBU has assessed the scientific basis for prediction models for further odontological conditions: malocclusions, disorders of the masticatory system and oral mucosal lesions.

In 2025 SBU published the report Prediktionsmodeller i tandvården. Underlag för Socialstyrelsens arbete med att utveckla en nationell modell för riskbedömning inom tandvården [Prediction models in dental care. Documentation for the work of the National Board of Health and Welfare on developing a national model for risk assessment in the field of dentistry].

Examine the state of knowledge regarding risk of committing acts of violence in society

In February 2025, SBU was commissioned by the government to review the state of knowledge regarding risk assessments in psychiatry and other health activities within health care regarding future propensity of committing violent crimes in society. SBU has, in a report, described the results from current and well‑conducted systematic reviews that compile research on the predictive validity of risk assessment instruments for forecasting violence in society.

The report also discusses ethical and practical aspects of using risk assessment instruments to predict violence within psychiatry and other health‑care services.

SBU published the report Riskbedömningar inom psykiatrin avseende framtida benägenhet att begå våldsbrott i samhället [Predictive validity of violence risk assessments in estimating the future likelihood of violent offending in the community].

Compile the state of knowledge on disinvestment

In 2025, SBU was commissioned by the government to compile systematic reviews on methods and factors that promote disinvestment¹ of treatments that are not of value for patients, as well as for verification of compliance with disinvestment decisions.

SBU has produced three reports that explain the concept of disinvestment, maps research in this area and describes in what way the process of developing knowledge for disinvestment can be done more efficiently.

SBU published three reports:
