Purpose of Assessment

The results are to be used for auditing medical practice to determine the appropriateness and necessity of hysterectomy. The panels ratings of appropriateness of this procedure will be used to determine to what extent there is an overuse of the procedure.

Panel meeting was held in December 1993.

Review process for the publication

Internal review by project steering committee, project reference group, SBU Board and SBU Expert Group. Additional external review by experts in the field.

Content of Report

The report includes (a) a description of methods for rating a comprehensive set of indications for performing hysterectomy and, (b) a presentation of how a panel of Swedish experts rated the appropriateness of indications for hysterectomy. The panel judged 1826 indications for hysterectomy, grouped in 18 chapters according to major medical problem.
