Is the risk for surgical site infection associated with when instruments are set up in the operating room?

Infections after surgery, surgical wound infections, are common healthcare associated infections. Several methods to try to minimize these infections are used, such as laminar air flow, hand hygiene etc. The instruments that are used during surgery are a potential source of bacterial contamination. It has been suggested that setting up instruments in an empty operating room would reduce surgical wound infections, but it could also result in higher costs.
