Ongoing Projects

SBU assess relevant and well-conducted research and investigate what effect different interventions have, if there are any risks or ethical problems, and what is most cost-effective in the areas of health care, dentistry, social services, and within the areas of functional disability and work environment.

Planned to be published: Quarter 4, 2026

Background

In early 2026, the Swedish Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Assessment of Social Services (SBU) was commissioned by the Swedish Government to examine the significance of occupational exposures in the etiology of cancer among firefighters. Following a literature search and consultations with domain experts, SBU determined that the most appropriate course of action was to prepare a critical commentary on the systematic review conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), entitled Firefighting and cancer: A meta-analysis of cohort studies in the context of cancer hazard identification (De Bono et al., 2023).

Aim

The aim of this project is to examine the role of occupational exposures in the development of cancer among firefighters by evaluating and critically commenting on the systematic review Firefighting and cancer: A meta-analysis of cohort studies in the context of cancer hazard identification by De Bono et al. (2023), applying SBUs methodological framework.
