Critical appraisal tools and checklists

On this page, we have collected tools for assessing risk of bias in various types of studies as well as SBU's ethical guidelines. Most of the tools SBU uses are produced by international organizations of which some have been translated into Swedish by SBU.

Systematic literature searches

A structured and thorough literature search is an essential part of a systematic review. The search should be exhaustive, thus retrieving all potentially relevant studies, as well as being transparently documented and reported.

Health economics

SBU’s mission includes assessment of interventions in healthcare, social services, and functional impairment from an economic viewpoint. The economic perspective is important since society’s resources are limited.

About Core Outcome Sets (COS) — standardized sets of outcomes that should be measured in all clinical trials for a specific condition, developed together with key stakeholders and with strong patient involvement and SBU’s work using the James Lind Alliance method to bring patients, carers, consumers, and professionals together to identify and prioritise the most important evidence gaps in their field.

Identification of evidence gaps

In an assessment, SBU scrutinizes the research published on a specific topic. Sometimes, based on the available evidence, it is not possible to determine whether a treatment is effective. Information about research topics in which knowledge gaps, or scientific uncertainties, have been identified, is stored in a database on SBU’s website.
