Infektion i operationssår är en vanlig komplikation efter kirurgiska ingrepp. Vanligtvis behandlas såret lokalt, systemisk antibiotika ges endast vid feber och påverkat allmäntillstånd.

SBU har identifierat en liten relevant randomiserad kontrollerad studie. I denna jämförde man behandlingsresultaten hos två grupper patienter med infekterade sår, dels baserat på en klinisk bedömning av läkningen av såren, och dels baserat på bakteriekolonisationen i såren. Utöver sedvanlig sårvård behandlades den ena gruppen med systemisk antibiotika, medan den andra behandlades med placebo. Inte alla sår var operationssår, och det framgår inte hur stor andel som var det. Det totala antalet patienter var bara 71.

Enligt författarna påverkade inte antibiotikabehandlingen den kliniska sårläkningen, men efter behandlingen var en signifikant större andel sår fria från bakterier i antibiotikagruppen jämfört med placebogruppen. Betydelsen av detta är oklar.

SBU har inte tagit ställning i sakfrågan eftersom studiens kvalitet inte har bedömts. Här redovisas därför endast artikelförfattarnas slutsatser.
